It has been over six months since I launched The Modern Dog of NJ, and recently, a quiet evening led me to watch the film Rescued by Ruby. What I initially expected to be a lighthearted dog movie turned out to be a deeply inspiring story—one that reinforced my passion for working in the pet retail industry.
My appreciation for dogs began early in life. As a child, my first meaningful interaction was with a German Shepherd owned by one of my parents’ deli employees. That experience left a lasting impression and marked the beginning of a lifelong love for dogs.
Rescued by Ruby tells the story of a shelter Border Collie mix named Ruby, who had been returned multiple times due to behavioral challenges. She is ultimately adopted by Corporal Daniel O’Neil, who is seeking a K-9 partner to train for the police unit. Without revealing too much, the film highlights the power of patience, commitment, and believing in potential that others may overlook.
Watching Ruby’s journey prompted me to reflect on my own career path. It reaffirmed that choosing to pursue my passion—rather than remaining in warehouse work—was the right decision. The film captured the same sense of hope and determination I felt as a child, rooting for an underdog to succeed.
While I am a devoted dog enthusiast, I hold particular admiration for working dogs, especially those serving in law enforcement, therapy, and military roles. Their intelligence, resilience, and dedication continue to inspire both my personal values and my professional mission.
